Proverbs 26:25 warns when an ignorant person rejects wisdom: “Do not believe him when he speaks graciously, for there are seven abominations in his heart.” Without God’s fear, a person lacks wisdom, does not live righteously, and has no concern for the truth.
The fool is full of lies and harbors seven abominations in his heart, despite the fact that he may seem friendly, well-mannered, polite, kind, and an intriguing communicator. So, what are the seven abominations of God?
Proverbs 6:16–19 describes these seven things as abominations, and God hates them. “The Lord despises six things in particular. He detests seven things: arrogant eyes, a lying mouth, hands that kill innocent people, a heart that plots wicked schemes, feet that move quickly toward evil, a false witness who tells lies, and someone who sows discord among brothers.”

7 Abominations To God
An abomination is something disgusting, repulsive, wicked, or despised. That is what we mean when we describe something as abhorrent. It expresses a strong dislike for something. That gives us a pretty good idea of how the Lord feels about these seven things mentioned, which He regards as abominations.
People might find it difficult to imagine that a loving Lord would discover something so awful that He would see it as disgusting. He is not blind to the sins committed by humans, nor is He tolerant of sinful behavior or action. Proverbs 6:16–19 provides a list of all seven sins that He does not like[1].
He Hates Haughty Eyes
First, he detests haughty eyes. Haughty connotes exalting oneself, being obsessed with oneself, and having pride and arrogance. Haughtiness is motivated by contempt for other people, a sense of superiority, and a sense of self-assurance that corresponds to a lack of faith in Him.
Being arrogant is similar to being like Nebuchadnezzar, who has a proud look and claims to have created his entire empire by himself before being given the mind of a beast by the Lord to be humbled (Daniel 4:28–37).
Haughtiness is the opposite of humility because when we are modest, we are concerned for others, grateful for God’s provision, refuse to exalt ourselves, and acknowledge Him in everything we do (Proverbs 3:5–6). He detests arrogant eyes that refuse to look up to him and look down on others.
He Hates A Lying Tongue
Second, he despises deceptive speech. The father of falsehoods is Satan (John 8:44), so it follows that God detests lying. Compared to murder or adultery, it may seem like a minor sin, but God does not consider lying to be a minor sin. He despises it.
Lying makes it harder to find the truth, fall in love, or maintain relationships. Lying destroys trust and turns a person into an island. Lying to get an advantage or protect yourself only hurts other people and the ones you love.
Those who are prone to lying probably also have some other pattern of wrongdoing that they need to cover up with lies. Liars do not love people; they just utilize them. Lying will take us down more quickly than we can imagine. On the other hand, the truth will immediately set us free (John 8:31–32).
According to the Book of James, the tongue is a tiny part of the body (James 3:5). However, the book continues by referring to the tongue as more of a personality than a bodily organ. When our lips talk, the words produced by the tongue or the words from it are the main lessons to be learned.
He Hates Hands That Shed Innocent Blood
Third, he despises the hands that kill an innocent person. He abhors murder, unjust conflicts, and situations in which we fail to take appropriate action to save innocent lives. He detests rules that fail to safeguard the defenseless and the innocent.
He despises people who have so thoroughly defiled themselves that the results of their deeds cause untold sorrow for others. He seeks out individuals, congregations, and nations that uphold moral principles and speak up for the defense of innocent people. The fool does not care about protecting innocent lives; instead, he will go to whatever lengths for his convenience and self-interest.
He Hates A Heart That Devises Wicked Schemes
Fourth, a heart that makes wicked imaginations is despised by God. While actively doing acts of evil is one thing, He dislikes us when we even entertain such thoughts. Instead of devising a scheme to sin, He wants our thought life to be honoring to Him, pursuing His will and His kingdom. If we can stop thinking about bad things in the first place, we can stop doing a lot of bad things.
He Is Concerned With The State Of The Heart
Since God constantly considers the heart (1 Samuel 16:7), He never interprets our actions according to how people would, but rather as outward manifestations of what He perceives internally. No matter what we do, whether it is immoral (such as stealing and adultery) or moral (such as going to church and doing community service), if our hearts are not in the proper place, He will find it appalling.
He Hates Feet That Run Rapidly To Evil
Fifth, he detests immediate steps toward evil. As Christians, we have the freedom to select the road of salvation He offers so that we do not have to surrender ourselves to sin’s temptation (1 Corinthians 10:13). We must be those who resist the devil by faith and engage in battle against evil (Ephesians 6:10–13).
At every available opportunity, the fool turns to evil thoughts. He does not consider the repercussions or the will of the Lord. Instead of rushing to do evil, we must be like Him, follow His excellent choice, and hate the temptations that the devil gives us.
He Hates A False Witness Who Tries Out Lies
Sixth, he detests a liar who bears false witness. God has previously said that He dislikes lying and a way of life that ultimately betrays trust and rejects the truth. Here, He declares that He despises liars and those who spread untruths about others.
We must be those who bear witness to the truth of God, His Word, and other people. False witnesses who unjustly tarnish someone else’s character are viewed as a tremendous evil by God. We must be careful who we support because we might believe that we are speaking the truth, but we might be talking about a falsehood.
He Hates A Person Who Stirs Up Conflict In The Community
Seventh, God despises the one who sows discord among brothers. When just one person makes others’ lives miserable, hatred and division can grow within human families and the spiritual family of God. By selecting fights, lying, enticing, taunting, or just being tough and uncooperative, we can create division among other people.
Some people favor strife and conflict over harmony and tranquility. He wants peace for His church, which is His body, to the extent that it depends on us (Romans 12:18). The fool does not bother to care about peace, interfering with God’s work and causing disruptions. God detests this mindset and behavior because of how utterly distracting and damaging it can be.
A Potential Counterargument
Yes, the Lord hates inconsistency. However, a wicked person’s offering is accepted when they approach God and offer it with a heart of repentance. That is the primary goal of a guilt offering. Someone who sinned during the week might be forgiven if they make the sacrifice accompanied by a penitent heart.
The Heart That Believes In God’s Mercy
There are at least two distinguishing characteristics of an upright heart. First, it quakes at God’s word. It feels vulnerable, powerless, and desperately in need of compassion. Second, it relies on God’s kindness to pardon, assist, and save all of us.
10 Bible Verses About The Seven Abominations
Proverbs 26:24–26
When someone speaks pleasantly, please do not believe them because they are harboring seven abominations in their hearts and minds. Even if their hatred is concealed by trickery, their wickedness will be revealed in front of the community.
Proverbs 24:11–12
Hold back those who are stumbling toward the slaughter, and save those who are being dragged away to be put to death. If you claim, “Look, we were unaware of this,” does the heart-weigher not sense it? He who keeps watching over your soul must be aware of it; otherwise, he would not reward a man according to his deeds.
Revelation 19:1–2
Following these events, I perceived what sounded like the resounding voice of a sizable crowd in heaven saying, “Hallelujah! Since He has condemned the big harlot who was defiling the earth with her immorality and taken revenge on her for the blood of His bondservants, our God is worthy of salvation, glory, and authority.”
Jeremiah 32:35
They constructed the Baal temples in the Ben-Hinnom Valley so that their sons and daughters would have to walk through fire to reach Molech. I had neither directed them nor had it ever crossed my mind that they should carry out this abomination to result in Judah’s sin.
Isaiah 44:19
Nobody can recollect, and neither does anybody have the knowledge nor understanding to make this claim and say, “I have burned half of it in the fire and made bread over its embers. I consumed roasted meat. I then turn the remainder of it into an abomination and kneel before a piece of wood.”
Deuteronomy 22:23–24
If a virgin girl who is engaged to a man is discovered in the city by another man who has an affair with her, you are required to take them both to the gate of the community. You must stone the girl to death for failing to cry out in public and stone the man to death for having an affair with his neighbor’s wife. As a result, you will eradicate the bad from your numbers.
Galatians 5:19–21
The fruits of the body are now clearly seen: sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, rivalry, conflict, jealousy, irrational outbursts, rivalries, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and other similar things. As previously, I forewarn you that individuals who engage in such behavior will not share in the inheritance of His kingdom.
Deuteronomy 25:13–16
You must not carry two items of different weights in your bag. You are not allowed to have other measurements in your home. Your days will be lengthened in the land that the Lord provides you with if you receive a full and just weight and measure. Everyone who engages in these actions and any unfair behavior is an abomination to the Lord your God.
Leviticus 7:21
Anyone who consumes the flesh of the sacrificed peace offerings that belong to the Lord and touches anything unclean—whether it be human uncleanness, an unclean animal, or any other unclean thing—will be exiled from His people.
Deuteronomy 7:25
You are to burn with fire the graven images of their gods or to take the silver or gold that is on them, but not to grab it for yourself. You will fall into their traps because it is an abomination to the Lord your God.
What Is Said About The Seven Abominations In The Holy Bible?
The Bible begs us to differ from those who would have us believe that all sin is the same and is thus all sin. The Bible mentions one type of sin that God referred to by a different name: it was labeled an abomination. However, any unrepentant transgression can send a person to hell.
In contrast to much preaching today, John the Baptist’s sermons were straightforward and to the point. He did not take shortcuts, favor anyone, or have a reputation to uphold. He may not have used the best homiletics in his delivery, but he spoke clearly and let the results be what they were.
The Bible uses the word “abomination” 174 times. We are given a list of seven “specials” in Proverbs 6—seven things God finds abhorrently repulsive. It is essential for every Christian to think carefully about the things that God finds unpleasant and to avoid them.
No day is better than today to start over if we have been wandering and backsliding. Keep in mind one of the lovely promises found in Psalm 23, “He restoreth my soul.” There will be new strength to triumphantly advance if we turn to the Lord in faith and repentance and with a mindset that is resolved by the grace of God to walk in accordance with His word.
We Have Options In Life
God has always given people the option to choose between life and death. In the beginning, He placed the trees of life and the knowledge of good and evil in the middle of the Garden of Eden, where people could choose between life and death.
The option between life and death was presented to the children of Israel before Moses led them into the Promised Land. See, I have laid life and wealth before you today, as well as death and destruction (Deuteronomy 30:15).
Choosing A Life
Jesus is the word made human, the way, the truth, and the life. An evil person generates evil things from the treasury of an evil heart, while a good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart. The words that come from your mouth are reflected in your heart.
Desperate Sinners’ Foundation For Hope
In Trinity’s fellowship, God is delighted to the brim. As a result, God is a mountain spring rather than a watering hole. It consistently supplies and overflows. Therefore, drinking from a spring is a better way to honor it than carrying water up the hill and pouring it into it.
We are not astonished to find from Scripture that the way to please God is to come to Him to receive and not to give, to drink and not to water, since that is the way God is, and our trust is reinforced to hold fast.
Why Does God Favor The Upright’s Prayers?
Because the prayers of the upright are an outworking of their hearts, He takes pleasure in them for the same reason that He hates the sacrifices of the wicked. However, unlike the heart of the wicked, the soul of the upright person glorifies God’s love, power, and grace.
A Gospel Appeal
Praise the God who created you. Delight in the loving God who created you. How? Draw near to the throne of grace in prayer, submit to its majesty and power, and take a drink from the river of the water of life that flows from God’s throne while on your knees.
A Prayer To Ask For God’s Forgiveness
Almighty God, our heavenly Father,
We have sinned against you. Through our faults in thought, speech, deed, and what we have left undone. Forgive us of all our transgressions in the Name of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit, and allow us to serve you in a renewed state of life to the praise of your Name.
Amen.
Conclusion
The 7 abominations to God are not the only sins to abstain from, but they do encompass the majority of the evil deeds forbidden by God. The sins that deal with a person’s innermost motives are among the things God detests among His people.
This is in keeping with the Ten Commandments that our Lord Jesus Christ elaborated upon in His Sermon on Mount Sinai (Matthew 5:21–48). Even before it is carried out, sin is committed the moment it is considered in the heart. We can reveal our underlying thoughts and motives by abstaining from the 7 things that the Lord hates.
How about Leviticus where God calls lovers of self, men with men and women with women is an abomination.
