The word “eternal” means something that has no beginning or end. Therefore, for God to be the eternal God, he must exist as the only being with no beginning or end who is uncreated and incapable of dying. He is the driving force behind all things made as a result. Scripture supports this idea of an eternal God in numerous contexts.

God’s eternity is consistently mentioned in the Bible. Only a true God preceded the creation of the earth and time, and we wonder about the idea of eternity. God did not make Himself. It is challenging to understand because everything we perceive with our five senses was once created by something or someone.

What Does It Mean That God Is Eternal?

The fact that the everlasting God is eternal[1] sets Him significantly apart from humankind. This suggests that God is beyond any restrictions imposed by time and that only He can give us eternal salvation. God’s eternal nature is indicated by the fact that He has an eternal spirit. His existence never ends, neither in the past nor in the future. He is also unaffected by the progression of events.

God Has No Ending

The heavens and the earth as we know them will one day disappear, along with the rest of His creation. But the eternal God will still exist even then. Psalm 102:25–27 expresses this in a song: “Old, You lay the foundation of the earth, and the skies are the work of Your hands. They will all fade away like clothing, but You will endure. They will all perish. They will disappear as You alter them like a robe, but You remain the same, and Your years never end.”

What Does The Bible Say About God Is Eternal?

The well-known passage, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the world,” is the opening line of the Bible (Genesis 1:1). This proves that God existed there before the heavens. God created the world, which is supported by numerous other verses in the Bible.

God Does Not View Time The Same Way That We Do

Regarding the accomplishment of His promises, “Remember this, dear ones: with the Lord, a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is patient with you, not wanting any to perish but rather that all would come to repentance. He is not slow to keep His promise as some count delay” (2 Peter 3:8–9).

God being eternal is also explained in Psalm 90:2: “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting, you are God.” Since humans measure everything over time, it is difficult for us to imagine or fully understand something that had no beginning but has always existed and will continue forever.

15 Bible Verses That Prove The Eternity Of God

In the beginning, God created all that was before: space, time, matter, and energy. Bible verses also declare that He loves His people forever, that He has an eternal purpose and plan, and that those who trust in Him through His son, Jesus Christ, will spend all of their eternal lives with Him.

Nehemiah 9:5

“Arise, bless the Lord your God forever and ever,” the Levites Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah commanded. O may Your beautiful name be exalted beyond all exaltation and adoration!

Psalms 39:1–7

I promised, “I will guard my steps and keep my tongue from sin; I will put a muzzle on my mouth while in the midst of the wicked,” and I kept my mouth shut. But as my distress mounted, so did the heat in my chest. The fire raged, and I uttered, “Show me, Lord, the end of my life and the number of my days. Let me realize how frail my life is.”

2 Chronicles 5:13

The house of the Lord was enveloped in a cloud when the trumpeters and singers were to make themselves heard with one voice to praise and glorify the Lord. When they lifted their voices, accompanied by trumpets, cymbals, and musical instruments, and when they praised the Lord, saying, “He indeed is good, for His lovingkindness is everlasting.”

Daniel 9:24

For your people and your holy city, seventy weeks have been set apart to complete the transgression, put an end to sin, atone for wrongdoing, usher in everlasting righteousness, enclose prophecy and vision, and anoint the most sacred of places.

Numbers 18:19

I have granted you, along with your sons and daughters, an everlasting allocation of all the holy offerings that the sons of Israel make to the Lord. Before the Lord, you and your descendants are bound by an eternal covenant of salt.

Daniel 7:14

John 10:28–30

They have eternal life that I give them, and no one will ever be able to take it away from them. No one can take them from my Father’s hand since He is more significant than all others and is the One who gave them to me. I am one with my Father.

Matthew 7:13–14

Enter through the small gate because there are many who enter through the large gate and the broad path that leads to ruin. But only a select few find it since the entrance to life is small and the way leading it is limited.

2 Timothy 4:7–8

I finished the race, kept the holy faith, and fought a good battle. Now, I have the crown of righteousness in reserve for me, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, through Christ Jesus, will give to me on that day—as well as to everyone else who has yearned for His appearance.

Jude 1:20–21

Isaiah 40:12

Lord God, the King eternal, can measure the exact length of the universe with His hand, hold the waters of the world, pack all the soil on the planet into a container the size of a planet, and then weigh every mountain. Everything is possible with God.

Ephesians 2:8–10

Because you were saved through faith and not through works, so that no one can take credit for it, you have been saved by grace through God’s gift of grace. We are God’s creation through Christ Jesus, and God predestined those good deeds for us to do.

Job 14:14–16

Will someone who passes away be resurrected? I will wait for my renewal the entire time I am working hard. You will want the creature your hands have created, and I will respond to your call. Then you will undoubtedly count my steps but ignore my fault.

1 John 5:13–14

In order for you to know that you have eternal life, I am writing these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God. We can approach God confidently, knowing that if we ask anything according to His will, He will hear us.

Conclusion

Only God is eternal; He is our enduring rock, He is our dwelling place, and underneath are the everlasting arms, and He lives an eternal life. God’s eternal nature is also what makes him completely different from humankind. These attributes make him lasting. At the appropriate time, the seasons arrive and go. In the spring, trees develop leaves, and in the fall, they shed them. Nobody can stop these tragedies from happening or change God’s plan, so they go on year after year.

All of this demonstrates God’s sovereignty and his purpose for the world. He will one day build a new heaven and earth that will exist alongside Him for all eternity. We who have been united to Jesus Christ, the son of the living God, by faith shall live an eternal life and share the eternity of the only wise God, who is the source of our being.
