The Bible tells us that God’s sovereignty is an inherent attribute of the heavenly Father. He has demonstrated His absolute and supreme power over all created things. In Isaiah 46:9, God says “I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me.” He is the only true God meant of the highest praise and glory.

Then what is the significance of God’s sovereignty[1] in our life as believers? God’s sovereignty brings us a whole new light of unshakable hope and faith in Him through the “God is Sovereign” Scripture. We are confident that we are safe in the powerful hands of the loving God through His Son Jesus Christ.

What Does Sovereignty Mean?

Sovereignty comes from the root word “sovereign”, which has everything to do with power and authority. It is defined and described as:

  • Superlative in quality or supreme excellence
  • Of the most exalted kind
  • Superior to all others
  • Possessed supreme power
  • Absolute (unlimited in extent)
  • Enjoying autonomy (independence and freedom from external control)
  • Supreme ruler or authority (royal)

What Does “God Is Sovereign” Mean?

This means that God has “exclusive supreme power and authority over all things” because He is the only true God and there is no other. He created all things under His power. From the vastness of the galaxies to the smallest atomic particles, from the first event of life to the very last, and from the beginning until the end of time, God has upheld and ordained them according to His purposes.

Isaiah 46:9-10 states, “Remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose.'”

God’s sovereignty also means “God is in control.” Nothing is beyond His reach, and His will and ways always prevail. The Lord establishes time, space, and events for the good of those who love Him and are called for His purposes. Proverbs 19:21 says, “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.”

Nothing is hidden from God because He knows everything—even the hairs on our heads are numbered. He searches the deepest motives and issues of man’s heart, and He understands our struggles and pains.

What Comes Into Your Mind When You Think About God’s Sovereignty?

God’s sovereignty is an assurance that everything is under His control, rule, and power. He allowed things and events to happen for a greater purpose, whether good or bad. Isaiah 45:6–7 says, “I form light and create darkness; I make well-being and create calamity; I am the Lord, who does all these things.” Even if the enemy means to bring harm, God brings good from undesirable circumstances, pains, and problems.

When God called Moses to deliver the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, He intentionally hardened the heart of the Pharaoh, who repeatedly refused to let Israel go. Several plagues were sent to Egypt and the Red Sea was divided to show God’s sovereign power in the eyes of Israel and Egyptian armies.
