The age-old debate on masturbation within Christianity has led to a variety of perspectives and opinions. With a wide range of beliefs and interpretations, how can Christians decipher the truth about this controversial subject? Is masturbation a sin in the Bible?

This blog post delves into the biblical view of masturbation, examines differing Christian perspectives, and provides practical tips for those seeking guidance on the issue.

By exploring the topic from various angles, we aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of the complexities surrounding masturbation within the Christian faith. Let’s embark on this journey towards clarity and discernment together.

Key Takeaways

  • The Bible does not explicitly mention masturbation, but its teachings on sexual immorality and self-control can guide Christians.
  • Perspectives on the issue of masturbation within Christianity vary, with arguments both for and against the practice.
  • Seeking God’s discernment through prayer, Scripture study, developing self-discipline, seeking accountability, and fostering spiritual growth are important steps in overcoming any unhealthy desires related to it.

Masturbation In The Bible: What Does It Say?

The Bible serves as the foundation of Christian beliefs and practices, but it does not explicitly mention masturbation. However, it does address sexual immorality, lust, and self-control, which can be applied to the topic. As a result, interpretations of these concepts have led to differing opinions on whether masturbation is a sin or a natural expression of human sexuality [1].

For a clearer understanding of the biblical view on masturbation, we should scrutinize particular passages and stories often associated with the topic. By examining the story of Onan, the Bible’s teachings on sexual immorality and lust, and the importance of self-control, we can gain insight into how these concepts relate to the issue of masturbation.

While there is no definitive answer provided in Scripture, Christians must consider these aspects when seeking guidance on this sensitive subject.

The subsequent sections will cover the story of Onan, sexual immorality and lust, and the role of self-control concerning masturbation.

The Story Of Onan

The story of Onan, found in Genesis 38, is often cited as evidence against masturbation. In this narrative, Onan is instructed by his father, Judah, to engage in a levirate marriage with his recently widowed sister-in-law.

However, Onan declines, and his disobedience results in his death. Some argue that the Holy Spirit convicts those who engage in similar acts of self-gratification, as Onan did.

Yet, it’s worth pointing out that Onan’s sin lies more in his disobedience and self-serving behavior than in the act itself.

Swedish Pentecostal pastor Christian Mölk points out that Onan’s sin was related to his failure to fulfill his duty under the Levirate law outlined in Deuteronomy 25:5–6, and that these passages are not concerned with masturbation or other sexual sins.

Sexual Immorality And Lust

The Bible condemns lust and sexual immorality, which can be connected to masturbation if it involves fantasizing about others or leads to addiction.

In Matthew 5:27–30, Jesus equates lustful thoughts with the act of adultery, emphasizing the importance of sexual purity. Additionally, 1 Corinthians 6:18 states that believers should “flee from sexual immorality,” providing a clear directive to avoid sexual sins.

Many Christians interpret these passages as a basis for considering masturbation a sin, as it involves sexual arousal outside of marriage. However, others argue that masturbation can be a means of avoiding sexual sin if it does not involve lustful thoughts or actions. The key distinction lies in the intentions and desires associated with the act of masturbation.

Christians should consider their motivations and thought processes when they engage in sexual activities like masturbation. By examining the biblical teachings on lust and sexual immorality, individuals can gain a deeper understanding of the potential implications of their actions and make informed decisions about their sexual desires.

Self-Control And The Holy Spirit

Self-control is a fruit of the Holy Spirit and is considered a crucial aspect of the Christian life, including in the realm of managing one’s sexual desire. The Bible instructs that a believer should abstain from sexual immorality and exercise self-control in governing their own body and urges (1 Thessalonians 4:3–5, 1 Corinthians 6:18–20).

By cultivating self-discipline and relying on the Holy Spirit’s guidance, Christians can make choices that honor God and promote spiritual growth. This includes resisting the temptation to engage in sexual activities that may be considered sinful, such as masturbation.

Perspectives On Masturbation And Christianity

Christians hold varying views on masturbation, with some arguing it is permissible and beneficial, while others believe it is sinful and harmful. These opposing perspectives often stem from interpretations of biblical teachings on sexual immorality, lust, and self-control, as well as cultural and personal beliefs.

Different Christian denominations have their stances on masturbation, reflecting the diverse range of opinions on this subject. By examining both supporting and opposing arguments, we can gain a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between masturbation and Christianity.

The subsequent sections will cover the arguments for and against masturbation, illuminating the complex perspectives within the Christian faith.

Arguments Supporting Masturbation

Proponents of masturbation argue that it can provide physical and emotional benefits and is not explicitly condemned in the Bible. Some of the benefits of masturbation include:

  • Helping individuals explore their sexual preferences
  • Maintaining a balanced sexual frequency within relationships
  • Offering health benefits such as improved sleep and reduced stress

The Church of Christ in Tulsa, for example, holds that not only masturbation but other acts can be considered sexual immorality. They acknowledge that masturbation is a natural part of self-exploration and is not explicitly mentioned in the Bible. They caution against it becoming an obsession that could potentially harm one’s conscience and future sexual life.

Yet, it’s worth pointing out that interpretations can differ among individuals and religious communities. Some theologians argue that masturbation can be a permissible expression of sexuality within certain boundaries, while others maintain that it goes against God’s design for sex and should be avoided, considering humans as sexual beings with specific purposes.

Arguments Against Masturbation

Critics of masturbation claim it can lead to lustful thoughts and addiction, as well as hinder intimacy in relationships. They argue that masturbation is a form of sexual immorality that is not in line with God’s teachings, as it involves sexual acts outside of marriage. Additionally, the Bible encourages sexual purity and cautions against giving in to lustful desires, which can be connected to the act of masturbation.

Masturbation can also create distance and dissatisfaction within relationships if it becomes a substitute for intimacy and communication. For instance, excessive masturbation can result in a partner feeling neglected or inadequate, negatively affecting the overall intimacy of the relationship.

While the Bible does not explicitly refer to masturbation, some believe that it does not honor God with one’s body and can be likened to lust and adultery. Hence, Christians should heed these arguments and consult trustworthy religious authorities for more insight on this subject.

Masturbation And Marriage

Masturbation within marriage can have both benefits and drawbacks, depending on the couple’s preferences and boundaries. For some, it can enhance their sexual relationship and pleasure both partners. However, for others, it can create distance and dissatisfaction if it becomes a substitute for intimacy and communication.

By openly discussing the role of masturbation in a marriage, couples can:

  • Set boundaries that ensure both partners feel comfortable and content
  • Communicate about their sexual desires and needs
  • Consider the potential benefits and drawbacks of incorporating masturbation into their relationship.

The subsequent sections will cover the benefits of masturbation for married couples, along with the possible drawbacks and boundaries to consider.

Benefits For Married Couples

Some couples find that masturbation can enhance their sexual relations and provide pleasure for both partners. For instance, psychologists view masturbation as potentially beneficial for a healthy marriage, as it can facilitate sexual exploration and pleasure and help to maintain a balanced sexual frequency within the relationship.

Moreover, research has demonstrated that participating in mutual masturbation can lead to heightened levels of sexual satisfaction for couples. By incorporating masturbation into their sexual relationship, married couples may experience increased intimacy, a stronger emotional connection, and a sexual orgasm produced by self-stimulation.

Potential Drawbacks And Boundaries

However, masturbation can also create distance and dissatisfaction if it becomes a substitute for intimacy and communication within a marriage. Excessive masturbation can result in a partner feeling neglected or inadequate, which can negatively influence the overall intimacy of the relationship.

To avoid these potential drawbacks in a heterosexual marriage, married couples need to communicate openly about their views on masturbation and establish clear boundaries that ensure both partners feel comfortable and content.

By setting and respecting these boundaries, couples can navigate the complexities of incorporating masturbation into their marriage in a way that honors their relationship and promotes mutual understanding.

Christians should seek God’s guidance on the issue of masturbation through prayer, studying Scripture, and listening to the Holy Spirit. As believers, it is essential to align our actions with God’s will and live under His teachings.

  1. About “lustful” thoughts. How many people have read M528 in the Greek? The Greek word epithumeseis (translated “lust”) refers to desire in general, not necessarily towards the sexual. It also pertains to focused desire (used both positively and negatively elsewhere in the NT), not casual admiration. Also if you compare it to Exodus 2017 in the Greek, you see a strong similarity between the two. This points to the idea of sinful lust being focused desire for an illicit act (fornication, adultery), not in feeling a surge over an attractive woman entering the scene. It has been argued in Song of Solomon ch 5 that the Shulamite woman had been masturbating over her beloved with her hands on the lock, dripping with myrrh. One can make the case that our ideas of “lust” derive more from Augustinian prudery than what Jesus actually said.

  3. Very Biblical. I have struggled with masterbation being a single Christian man. I understand now the truths about the triggers and what’s God says in His Word about lust and impure thoughts. I repented and ask Jesus to be my strength in this weakness. It is very tough being single. Please pray for me and all that are affected by this.
