The story of “Jesus walks on water” is one of the most iconic and noteworthy miracles in the Bible [1]. The event took place on the Sea of Galilee, near Capernaum.

Situated in the northern part of Israel, this freshwater lake is surrounded by hills and prone to sudden storms due to its geographical location. The Sea of Galilee served as a frequent backdrop for Jesus’ teachings and miracles.

The miracle of Jesus walking on the water demonstrated his power over nature and convinced Jesus’ disciples that he was indeed the son of God. Jesus was not just an ordinary man but was also God incarnate, with supernatural abilities. This story has been used by preachers for centuries to inspire faith and awe among believers.

How And Why Did Jesus Walk On Water?

After people saw the sign Jesus performed, Jesus withdrew to a mountain by himself, where he fed the five thousand, after which he sent his apostles ahead of him by boat to cross the Sea of Galilee while he went up on a mountainside to pray.

Later that night, when they were halfway across the sea, they encountered a strong wind that caused waves to crash against their boat. The storm intensified, causing them to struggle against the turbulent current.

Shortly before dawn, Jesus went out to them, walking on the water. As the apostles struggled on their boat against the stormy sea of Galilee, they saw someone walking towards them amidst the raging sea. They were terrified, thinking it was a ghost. But immediately Jesus spoke to them: “It is I; do not be afraid.” In John’s account, we will find that the boat reached the shore immediately. In Matthew’s narrative, however, Peter walks on water with Jesus.

Amidst the disciples’ astonishment, Peter answered, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” Jesus replied, “Come.” Peter climbed out of the boat and started walking towards Jesus but soon became afraid when he saw how strong the wind was blowing around him and began sinking into the water. He cried out for help, saying, “Lord, save me!” And Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him.

Jesus told Peter, “You have little faith; why did you doubt?” When they got into the boat, the wind died down. Those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly, you are the Son of God” (Matthew 14:28–33).

Jesus walked on water to demonstrate his divine power. This story also teaches us that when we follow Jesus and answer his calling, we can do incredible things through him.

Lessons Learned From Peter Walking On The Water

  1. Keeping Your Eyes On God: Just like Peter took his eyes off Jesus and focused on the storm around him, we often get distracted by the challenges we face in life. We need to remember to keep our focus on Christ during difficult times.
  2. Trusting In God’s Power: When Peter first stepped out of the boat onto the sea, he trusted in Jesus’ power. However, when he started sinking, he doubted that power. We need to have faith in God’s ability to help us through any situation.
  3. Choosing Between Belief And Doubt: The disciples witnessed firsthand both the power of belief (when Peter walked on water) and doubt (when he began sinking) while they were with Jesus Christ on the sea. We must choose whether we will believe or doubt God’s promises.

Jesus Walks On Water: Understanding The Significance

The miraculous event of Jesus walking on water was not an isolated incident but rather a testament to the extraordinary nature of his ministry. Throughout his time on Earth, Jesus performed numerous miracles, demonstrating his compassion, power, and the arrival of God’s kingdom.

Demonstration Of Jesus’ Divine Power

This narrative is also a powerful demonstration of his divine authority over nature. Water holds deep symbolic significance throughout the Bible. It represents chaos, danger, and uncertainty. This miracle signifies his mastery over the chaotic aspects of life and his ability to bring calmness and order to our turbulent circumstances.

This in itself was a sign of Jesus’ authority over all creation. He had complete control over everything, including the laws of nature. This event shows that nothing is impossible for him, and he can do anything he wants to do.

Jesus’ walking on water highlights his authority and power over creation. It reminds us that when we place our trust in him, we can overcome any adversity. Just as Jesus defied the limitations of the natural world, we, too, can find strength in relying on his divine power.

Jesus Strengthens Our Faith

During the darkest hours of the night, the disciples witnessed a figure approaching them, walking effortlessly on the stormy sea. Startled and afraid, they initially thought it was a ghost. But Jesus called to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.”

The event also strengthened the faith of Jesus’ disciples. His followers were going through difficult times and were struggling with their faith in him as their Lord and Savior. However, seeing him walk on water gave them hope and renewed their belief in him.

Foreshadowing Jesus’ Victory Over Death

This miracle foreshadowed his ultimate victory over death. Walking on water was just one example of his divine power, but it pales in comparison to what he would later accomplish—rising from the dead after being crucified for our sins.

The story of Jesus walking on water serves as a powerful reminder of his divinity, authority, and the importance of unwavering faith. Through this miraculous event, Jesus reveals his power over nature, teaches valuable lessons about trust and overcoming fear, and solidifies his role as the Son of God.
