The Bible is a living testimony that God keeps His promises. It is proof that God is faithful and trustworthy. However, the promise of God’s faithfulness is not just limited to the stories in the Bible. It is also a belief that is shared by many believers who have experienced God’s goodness, grace, and mercy in their lives.

Christians believe that God will keep His promises even in the face of adversity or uncertainty. This belief provides comfort and hope in difficult times and serves as a reminder of God’s unwavering love for His people.

What Does The Bible Say About God Keeps His Promises?

The Bible is filled with testimonies of God’s promises fulfilled. Throughout the scriptures, there are numerous examples of God demonstrating His faithfulness and love for His people. These stories serve as a reminder that God keeps His promises, and we can trust in Him to fulfill His promises in our own lives.

  • God promised Abraham to become the “Father of a great nation” (Genesis 12:2–3, 17:1–27) even though he has no children at the age of 75 and Sarah is barren (Genesis 11;30). God spoke to Abraham that Sarah will bear a son, Isaac, and become the “mother of nations.” His descendants will also take possession of the land in Canaan, the promised land. All of these were fulfilled.
"I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you." — Genesis 17:7
  • God promised Joshua, “I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses” (Joshua 1:3). Wherever Joshua would go to conquer a land, God would give him victory: the promised land.
"Not one of all the Lord's good promises to Israel failed; everyone was fulfilled." — Joshua 21:45
  • God fulfilled the messianic promise, the birth of the ruler or king of Israel, the savior Jesus Christ.
"Therefore, the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel." — Isaiah 7:14
"For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this." — Isaiah 9:6–7
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." — John 3:16

This verse reminds us that all of God’s promises are fulfilled in Christ, who is the ultimate fulfillment of God’s promise to send our Savior.

Does God Always Keeps His Promises?

When God makes a covenant, He will fulfill it in His time, in His ways, and for His purposes. He is a sovereign and almighty God that can orchestrate circumstances, things, people, and events to fulfill His will and promises. He knows what the future brings. He does not lie and is unchangeable. The scripture says:

He is not a man that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it? Behold, I received a command to bless: he has blessed, and I cannot revoke it." — Numbers 23:19–20

The divine nature of God is steadfast love, faithfulness, and truth. We can trust God. He kept His promises through thousands of generations before us. He was, He is, and He will fulfill every word He has said to accomplish His will. The scriptures say:

"For just as rain and snow fall from heaven and do not return without watering the earth, making it bud and sprout, and providing seed to sow and food to eat, so My word that proceeds from My mouth will not return to Me empty, but it will accomplish what I please, and it will prosper where I send it." — Isaiah 55:10–11
"Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments." — Deuteronomy 7:9

It is important to note that most of God’s promises have preconditions, as Deuteronomy 7:9 states “with those who love Him and keep His commandments.” God does keep His promises no matter what, but to reap the fruits of His faithfulness, the people of God must also do their part in the covenant.

How Do His Promises Work In Our Lives?

God’s promises work in our lives through faith, even with it being the size of a mustard seed. It applies to the whole world who believe in the Lord Jesus. Faith, after all, is what makes God pleased with us. There are 3,573 tried and tested promises in the Bible. They are applicable and should be working for us as well. God’s word and promises vary in their context.

God has different rhema[1]or spoken words to His children. God’s promise to Abraham is different from that of David. The same applies to all believers. God has a specific promise for every believer. It is important to know that we cannot use God’s promise to conform to our motives, desires, and will. It is based on God’s will and purposes for us. God’s promises also work through one’s faith, attitude, and obedience.

There are different kinds of promises fulfilled by the Heavenly Father. First, an unconditional promise is one whose accomplishment lies only with the promises of God; His promise is independent of people and situations. An example of this was the child-bearing promise of God to Sarai (Sarah) and Moses. It’s a matter of waiting. After 25 years, Sarah conceived his son Isaac.

The conditional promise is the one whose fulfillment depends on the faith, attitude, and obedience of people. In John 15:7, it is written, “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” The fulfillment of this promise is based on two conditions, remaining in God and His word means to be faithful to God and the promise is whatever you pray for or wish, it will be done to you.
